Marsh restoration projects in the Lower Fraser River; No.2 Road
Using big tools for small salmon.
Invasive hybrid cattail had completely taken over this marsh, preventing juvenile salmon from utilizing the area to rear.
Over the past 2 years, members of our Wild Salmon Program team have been closely monitoring numbers of young salmon in this space. They do this through on the ground sampling: catching a group of fish, measuring and identifying the species of each individual, releasing them, and repeating. Over. And over. From March to August, 4-5 days a week, our team is on the ground to track how salmon use this and similar sites throughout the Fraser River estuary.
After months of work to remove the cattail, excavate debris, and lower the elevation of the entire wetland, salmon numbers have increased and connectivity has improved!
