Marsh restoration projects in the Lower Fraser River; Shaughnessy Street Park
From rock and rip-rap, to thriving juvenile salmon habitat.
The Fraser River estuary should be a thriving ecosystem for juvenile salmon, a place to rest, feed, and grow before heading out to the ocean. Today, much of that habitat has been replaced by rip-rap, cement, and other engineered materials that offer little of what salmon actually need.
This winter, our team worked to address the lack of estuary habitat, focusing on the foreshore along Shaughnessy Street Park. We removed old cement slabs and discarded materials, brought in natural marsh substrate, and built a ‘marsh bench’ with small channels to provide juvenile salmon more of the functional marsh habitat they need to survive and grow.
Now, we’re planting native marsh species to bring this site back to life.
More updates to come as the marsh continues to take shape.
