A year in review: What was Achiever up to in 2025?
Watch our research vessel travel around the BC coast using our live tracking map.
Raincoast’s research vessel, SV Achiever, offers education, research, and engagement opportunities on the BC coast year round. In 2025, the ship hosted youth trips, conducted community outreach and engagement activities, and hosted Raincoast scientists as they studied killer whale communication, grizzly bears, and coastal wolves. Read more about what Achiever was up to in 2025 in our annual report, Tracking Raincoast into 2026.
We created a map to help you keep up with Achiever as it undertakes projects around the BC coast. A GPS aboard Achiever frequently transmits its coordinates to display the current and past locations of the ship. Using the dropdown menu in the top left corner, tracks from previous years can be viewed and compared. As you can see below, Achiever was busy and covered a lot of distance in 2025.
Ever wonder why sometimes Achiever isn’t moving? Achiever makes occasional visits to the shipyard for scheduled maintenance and general repairs. This is important to ensure the ship is updated, functioning at its best, and ready to safely host more projects. Currently, our marine operations team is looking into repowering Achiever with the objective of turning it into the first hybrid electric research ship on the coast. We also have occasional downtime during our operational season, where the crew has a chance for some time off, and/or for repairs and maintenance to be completed while alongside a dock.
While out on a trip, Achiever can also be used as a home base while smaller boats conduct research nearby. So even when it appears that Achiever is not moving, our researchers are still hard at work on land or at sea.
Keep an eye on the live tracking map to see where Achiever travels in 2026!
