What does whacking a metal pole tied to the side of our research vessel have to do with killer whale conservation
Behind-the-scenes of killer whale field research.
🤔Science, or stress management?
Both! What does whacking a metal pole tied to the side of our research vessel have to do with killer whale conservation…? 🎬If you’re familiar with a movie clap board, this works the same way!
Raincoast scientists, alongside specialists from Earth Species Project, are examining how underwater noise, one of the fastest-growing forms of pollution in the ocean, affects communication, coordination, and group cohesion among killer whale populations.
By combining aerial drone footage and underwater acoustic recordings, we’re tackling some big questions: How are their vocal behaviours shaped – or disrupted – by rising noise levels in the ocean?
How can we better protect the acoustic lifelines their survival depends on? You can help find the answers. Visit raincoast.org/listen to learn more.
