Why monthly giving is crucial for long-term conservation success.
As the giving season swiftly approaches, many of us will take a moment to think about the meaning of donating and the impact we want to make in charitable giving. It’s easy to reflect on the big wins, like our acquisition of the Southern Great Bear Rainforest tenure to end commercial trophy hunting of coastal carnivores, but major breakthroughs like this don’t happen every day.
The reality of progress at Raincoast lies in the ongoing operations of our core programs that will, ultimately, result in those victories. Making that happen comes down to healthy budgets and reliable funding – something that monthly giving is designed to provide.
Why are recurring donations so important? Having a consistent stream of income allows us to plan ahead to achieve our scientific research, conservation advocacy efforts, and public outreach goals.
While certain time-sensitive initiatives do require big financial pushes and larger campaign-specific contributions, it can sometimes be more feasible to plan other longer term projects based on consistent donations. In addition, monthly giving can often be more manageable for many donors. Reliable support also contributes to our overall organizational health which, in turn, may lead to further funding by major entities.
We continue to maintain a culture of efficiency and pragmatism with low admin costs and nimble, resourceful programs. We maintain this level of organizational agility through the steady support of monthly giving.
Take our Cetacean team for example, who resolutely work toward the recovery of the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales – their recent pilot project designed to understand killer whale communication dynamics using hydrophones, drones, and machine learning was overwhelmingly successful. While some may think that grants from foundations or governments cover it all, operational expenses can be harder to attract.
Additionally, navigating an ever-changing funding landscape year to year can require our team to focus time on financing their programs that could instead be dedicated to the mission.
That’s where the real value of recurring donations comes in.
We are grateful that the Raincoast community has remained strong and resilient.
