Join us for Trees to Seas EcoFair
Raincoast, Pender Islands Conservancy, and PenderPOD, are working together to create a weekend of restoration, education, and environmental action on S,DÁYES (Pender Islands), all in support of permanently protecting KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest!
In the spring of 2022, members of the Raincoast and Pender Islands Conservancy teams met with a long-time contributor to both organizations’ work: Andy MacKinnon. Those who are familiar with Andy know he is an expert ecologist with an undying passion for fungi, a passion that drove him to publish the book Mushrooms of British Columbia in fall 2021, alongside Kem Luther.
Most autumns, Andy’s calendar is crammed with commitments to attend fungi forays across Vancouver Island, and during our meeting together he encouraged Raincoast and the Conservancy to organize a foray of our own to raise awareness about our ongoing campaign to purchase and permanently protect KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest.
A few months later, we pitched Andy’s idea on S,DÁYES (Pender Islands) at a community meeting of conservation minded folks called Pender Earth. Now, with the help of local grassroots group, PenderPOD and a mighty team of volunteers, we are less than a month away from not only a fungi foray with the renowned mycologist, Hugues Massicotte, but a weekend-long EcoFair full of conservation, restoration, education, and fun!
Trees to Seas EcoFair will include
- an educational EcoExpo featuring representatives from conservation and restoration organizations from across the Salish Sea region
- a silent auction featuring items from local retailers, restaurants, breweries, outdoor outfitters, artists, and tour operators
- restoration activities including invasive species removal, meadow making, and tree planting
- fungi forays
- an evening wine and cheese gala
Additional details and the full schedule are available on the EcoFair page and tickets can be reserved through Eventbrite. All proceeds raised throughout the weekend will support the permanent protection of KELÁ_EKE Kingfisher Forest.

Raincoast’s in-house scientists, collaborating graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors make us unique among conservation groups. We work with First Nations, academic institutions, government, and other NGOs to build support and inform decisions that protect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and the wildlife that depend on them. We conduct ethically applied, process-oriented, and hypothesis-driven research that has immediate and relevant utility for conservation deliberations and the collective body of scientific knowledge.
We investigate to understand coastal species and processes. We inform by bringing science to decision-makers and communities. We inspire action to protect wildlife and wildlife habitats.
