Jaclyn Aubin, PhD
Research Scientist
Dr. Jaclyn Aubin is a post-doctoral researcher for Raincoast’s Cetacean Research Program and the University of Windsor. She holds an MSc from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a PhD from the University of Windsor, where her dissertation examined the vocal behaviour and social structure of belugas in the St. Lawrence Estuary.
Jaclyn works at the intersection of animal behaviour and conservation; much of her work explores how insights into whale behaviour can inform more effective conservation strategies. Her current work examines the vocal behaviour of belugas in Churchill, Manitoba, and their responses to anthropogenic noise. As the Arctic warms and human activity increases in previously undisturbed habitats, the Port of Churchill is expected to become significantly noisier, with potentially detrimental effects on belugas and other wildlife.
Jaclyn brings extensive experience in both marine and terrestrial fieldwork, having also contributed to research projects on moose, caribou, and songbirds. She employs diverse field techniques including acoustic monitoring, drone-based and visual observation, and playback experiments. When not in the field, she enjoys diving into datasets to uncover their hidden stories.
