Hosted by the UBC Sustainability Ambassadors in celebration of SDG Month\, this event brings together local organizations\, advocates\, and community leaders working toward a more resilient\, equitable\, and climate-conscious False Creek. \n\n\n\nPlacemaking is about more than just physical space. It’s about relationships: to the land\, to water\, to food systems\, to mobility\, and to each other. Through interactive booths\, community dialogue\, and hands-on activities\, people of all ages can explore how sustainability and climate justice contribute to vibrant\, inclusive spaces in our city. \n\n\n\nFalse Creek\, outside Science World\n\n\n\nJoin us at 11am to 2pm\, Saturday\, March 7\, at False Creek\, outside of Science World. DESCRIPTION:Chavon Robertshaw\, Program Coordinator and Wildlife Technician with the Raincoast Conservation Foundation\, will present an in-depth overview of the Wolf Conservation Program and its work studying and protecting gray wolves (Canis lupus) in British Columbia. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Nicole Van Zutphen.\n\n\n\nThe presentation will explore wolf biology and ecology – how wolves navigate complex social structures\, vast territories\, and play a vital ecological role – before turning to the conservation challenges they face today. Participants will also learn about the program’s wildlife welfare ethics and minimally invasive research methods – such as wildlife camera traps and genetic sampling – demonstrating how science can deepen our understanding of wolves while respecting their welfare. \n\n\n\nThis session offers ElderCollege participants a thoughtful look at the science\, ethics\, and evolving landscape of wolf conservation in BC. \n\n\n\nThis event is private to ElderCollege participants.

SUMMARY:Join Priya Puri and the Fraser River Discovery Centre: An afternoon as an ecologist
DESCRIPTION:Step into the shoes of an ecologist and explore the urban forest up close. This hands-on workshop in Mundy Park gives you the opportunity to experience how ecologists study forest ecosystems. Using real field tools like DBH tapes and plant guides\, you’ll measure trees\, shrubs\, and understorey plants\, and get a closer look at the structure and diversity of the forest. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of forest ecology and the methods scientists use to monitor and study natural environments. \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\n\n\n\nPriya is the Forest Conservation Program Coordinator at Raincoast Conservation Foundation. She completed her Master of Science in Forestry at UBC in 2024\, where she specialized in forest pathology and tree breeding. Priya also completed her Bachelor of Science Honours in 2020\, also at UBC Forestry\, where she focused on plant/forest physiology\, genomics\, and ecology. Priya studied the decline of native Arbutus menziesii – a unique tree species characteristic of Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems. \n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nHands-on exploration\n\n\n\n\nHands-on experience using real field tools to measure trees\, shrubs\, and understorey plants.\n\n\n\nExplore forest structure and diversity in an urban forest setting.\n\n\n\nGain a deeper understanding of forest ecology and how ecologists study ecosystems.\n\n\n\nRegistration cost includes an entry pass for the Fraser River Discovery Centre.\n\n\n\n\nWHO: This workshop is intended for participants 16 years of age and older.WHEN: March 28th\, 2:00pm – 4:00pm WHERE: Mundy Park \n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\nStudent (Student ID Required)\, Senior (65 and older)\, or Member – $18 Early Bird (until Feb 28th) – $18Regular (starting Mar 1st) – $20

SUMMARY:Deadline to take action to call on the federal government to make good on its promise to protect the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF)
DESCRIPTION:Since 2019\, the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) has been the catalyst for 170 projects to safeguard and recover Pacific salmon in coastal BC. Several projects funded by BC SRIF have been recognized by UNESCO as major contributors to the UN Ocean Decade\, highlighting their importance to global marine health. The fund has supported over 3\,500 jobs across urban and rural BC\, and provided training for 2\,700 people.  \n\n\n\nIt’s set to expire at the end of March. However\, Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to renewing and increasing funding for it in his 2025 election platform. \n\n\n\nIts expiration would impact ongoing work across BC to restore salmon habitat and stall innovative research into how we can modernize our approach to monitoring salmon populations.  \n\n\n\nLearn more and take action
