SUMMARY:Diving deep: Protecting and recovering endangered Southern Resident killer whales
DESCRIPTION:Join experts at our free event at SFU Harbour Centre: Wednesday\, May 27. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nValeria VergaraMisty MacDuffeeMichael Jasny \n\n\n\nPoster by David Suzuki Foundation\n\n\n\nSouthern Resident Killer Whales\, or southern resident orcas\, are a distinct population that inhabit the coastal waters of British Columbia and Washington state. Today\, they are critically endangered\, with only a small population remaining. Losing them would mean the extinction of a genetically and culturally unique group that cannot be replaced. \n\n\n\nAs apex predators\, southern resident orcas play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Their survival is closely tied to the health of Chinook salmon populations – their primary food source – and to the overall condition of our coastal waters. \n\n\n\nThat’s why we’re bringing together leading orca experts to explore the key threats facing this iconic species – from declining Chinook salmon to ocean noise and disturbance – and to discuss the policies and actions underway\, as well as what more can and should be done to support their recovery. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a public reception and engaging conversation about how we can work together to restore Chinook salmon and protect southern resident orcas. \n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, May 27\, 6:30 – 8 p.m. PDT. Come for 6 p.m. PDT for a free reception with refreshments. \n\n\n\nWho: Valeria Vergara and Misty MacDuffee (Raincoast Conservation Foundation)\, Michael Jasny (Natural Resources Defence Council\, NRDC). Moderated by Sharlene Shaikh (David Suzuki Foundation). \n\n\n\nWhere: SFU Harbour Centre (Challenge Theatre\, Room 1900\, 515 West Hastings Street\, Vancouver).
