Our Salmon Runners are hitting the streets

Help our salmon runners raise money for initiatives that inspire youth to protect wild salmon ecosystems.

Up and down the BC coast wild salmon are returning to the streams and watersheds their progenitors spawned in years, and centuries, earlier. Coupled with their biological drive to reproduce is the delivery of food energy and nutrients to bears, killer whales, wolves, birds, insects and even future generations of salmon themselves.

Increasingly however, too few salmon are reaching their spawning grounds and the grizzlies and wildlife that need them the most. Wild salmon face a marathon of hooks, nets, and fish farms that lie at the mouths of their natal streams. Additionally, habitat changes in marine and freshwater further reduce their chance of survival.

This Thanksgiving weekend, our team of Salmon Runners will be hitting the streets of Victoria in the 32nd Annual Goodlife Fitness Marathon to raise funds for wild salmon and our work to keep these miraculous fish returning to watersheds in our coastal ecosystem.

But we need your help.

Wildlife need salmon runs; support our run for wild salmon

Raincoast is an Official Pledge Charity of the GoodLife Fitness Victoria marathon for the third year. Your pledge supports our programs inspiring youth interested in science and conservation to act for British Columbia’s wild salmon and the wildlife that depend on them.

Birds at Sea

Marine birds are among the most spectacular and diverse members of the marine environment. They are also among the most vulnerable to human activities. Beginning in 2005, Raincoast Conservation Foundation has undertaken extensive at-sea marine bird surveys in the waters of the north and central coast. With major industrial developments, including oil supertankers, being proposed for these waters, marine bird conservation concerns are growing.

Join Caroline Fox, Marine Bird Program Coordinator, on a seasonal journey with the marine birds that inhabit the waters lying adjacent to the Great Bear Rainforest.

Victoria Marathon pledge program celebrates five years

The run for $250,000 is on.

Last week, the team behind the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon announced a total of 18 charities have been selected to the event’s 2010 Charity Pledge Program (CPP). That’s already seven more charities than last year, said GFVM general manager Cathy Noel. “We have so many charities on pace to better their numbers from last year,” said Noel.

Along with the marathon, there is a half-marathon, an eight kilometre run and the Thrifty Foods one-kilometre kids race. With so many pledging participants, the GFVM is becoming one of Victoria’s major charity fundraising events of the year.

New charities in 2010 CPP include KidSport Greater Victoria, Joints In Motion Training Team (Arthritis Society), Threshold Housing Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria, Missing Children Society of Canada,
Capital Families Association West Shore and the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre.

Returning charities looking to better their totals from last year are the B.C. Cancer Foundation, The Lung Association (B.C.), Choices Adoption and Counselling, C-Fax Santas Anonymous, Mount St. Mary Foundation, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Beacon Community Services, Team Diabetes Canada and the Victoria Women’s Transition House Society.

Aside from the CPP there are also four official charities of the Victoria Marathon, KidSport Greater Victoria, Raise A Reader, GoodLife Kids Foundation and the Kilee Patchell-Evans Autism Research Group.

Alexandra Morton will be giving an evening presentation about her reasons for rallying the public around wild salmon. She’ll share her experiences about her journey on the Migration and her hopes for the next day’s rally in Victoria at the Parliament buildings. A table will be set up at the event with art supplies for people to build flags, banners, posters etc for the march into Victoria the following morning.

Join the last leg of the ‘Get Out’ Migration Walk

Checkpoint: Sidney to Victoria Saturday, May 8, 2010 – 08:00

Route & Checkpoints (from Alex)

We are walking from Sidney to Victoria, starting at 8:00am – our final leg of the Migration! We will walk roughly 30km to the BC Parliament buildings.

We will post our exact route as the 8th approaches, but it will be subject to change.

8:00am – 22km - The route will begin at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, 9811 Seaport Place, in Sidney. We will walk roughly 22 km along highway #17 into Victoria, and exit off Quadra St to 4085 Quadra St.

12:30pm – 7km – Lana Popham, NDP MLA for Saanich South, will be hosting a rest stop along the way at her constituency office, 4085 Quadra St (Quadra and Nicholson). From here, we will walk roughly 7km to Centennial Square.

2:00-3:00pm – 1km – Meet up at Centennial Square (Douglas and Cormorant St) to join up with the Migration. Festivities start at 2:00pm in Centennial Square, including music, speakers and a wild salmon bbq. See here for event details. We will arrive sometime between 2-2:30pm.

We will march the final km to the Legislature together at 3:30pm. It is a 1km walk for our final leg of the Migration.

4:00pm – Rally at the Legislature, including delivery of petitions and guest speakers. Bring signs! It would be great to see the names of all the towns being represented, along with animals that depend on the wild salmon.

This is your chance to let Ottawa see you care about wild salmon.

MP Fin Donnelly, who is the West Coast Fisheries Critic and sits on the Fisheries Standing Committee in Ottawa, will receive us after our journey. Other elected officials will also be present (more information to follow). We will deliver our petition, signatures on Alexandra’s letter to Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, along with photographs of the Migrations planned in solidarity around the world and the Salmon Are Sacred Artwork we have collected from children and communities along the way.
