Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations. This movement is not about politics; it is about protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, and fishing industry. Let us share our knowledge, energies and passion for protecting all of the above from the devastating effects of oil drilling.

Hands Across the Sand is now international <http://handsacrossthesand.com/international.php> . Any person in any country may plan events on this website. This is a peaceful gathering of the people of the world. Planning an event is as simple as this:

Go to your beach on June 26 at 11 AM.
Form lines in the sand and at 12:00, join hands.
The image is powerful, the message is simple. NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.

NO to Offshore Oil Drilling
YES to Clean Energy.
12 Noon, Saturday June 26th, at a beach near you.
Hands Across the Sand <http://handsacrossthesand.com/>

Locally in British Columbia, there are 4 events planned so far, and more may arise before June 26th:

Victoria – Willows Beach (not Ogden Point). Meet 11am onwards
Renee Lindstrom and Lisa Cole lisafcole@gmail.com <mailto:lisafcole@gmail.com> 250-361-7508 Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=134145213266354&ref=mf>

Vancouver – English Bay. Meet 11am onwards, 1795 Beach Ave
Fiona Bowie BCAAOSD@gmail.com <mailto:BCAAOSD@gmail.com>

Hornby Island – Big Tribune Bay. Meet 11am onwards
Shannon Warwick bridging@telus.net <mailto:bridging@telus.net>

Kelowna – Tugboat Bay. Meet 11am onwards
Miriam Cunha yonisha.ar.raqis@gmail.com <mailto:yonisha.ar.raqis@gmail.com> 250-448-5523 Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125249630845293>

In Victoria, Willows Beach is 800 metres long, so we need 600 people to cover the entire length of the beach. It will be a good low tide that morning. Please come and enjoy the fun, and help send the powerful message of NO OFFSHORE DRILLING FOR OIL in BC’s waters – CLEAN ENERGY NOW.

Supported and endorsed by the BC Sustainable Energy Association <http://www.bcsea.org/get-involved/become-a-member> , the Green Party of Canada <http://greenparty.ca/> , the Sierra Club of BC <http://www.sierraclub.bc.ca/> , the Raincoast Conservation Foundation <http://www.raincoast.org/> , the Georgia Strait Alliance <http://www.georgiastrait.org/> , and the David Suzuki Foundation <http://www.davidsuzuki.org/> .

Victoria News By Travis Paterson

The run for $250,000 is on.

Last week, the team behind the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon announced a total of 18 charities have been selected to the event’s 2010 Charity Pledge Program (CPP). That’s already seven more charities than last year, said GFVM general manager Cathy Noel. “We have so many charities on pace to better their numbers from last year,” said Noel.

Along with the marathon, there is a half-marathon, an eight kilometre run and the Thrifty Foods one-kilometre kids race. With so many pledging participants, the GFVM is becoming one of Victoria’s major charity fundraising events of the year.

New charities in 2010 CPP include KidSport Greater Victoria, Joints In Motion Training Team (Arthritis Society), Threshold Housing Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria, Missing Children Society of Canada,
Capital Families Association West Shore and the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre.

Returning charities looking to better their totals from last year are the B.C. Cancer Foundation, The Lung Association (B.C.), Choices Adoption and Counselling, C-Fax Santas Anonymous, Mount St. Mary Foundation, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Beacon Community Services, Team Diabetes Canada and the Victoria Women’s Transition House Society.

Aside from the CPP there are also four official charities of the Victoria Marathon, KidSport Greater Victoria, Raise A Reader, GoodLife Kids Foundation and the Kilee Patchell-Evans Autism Research Group.

She’ll share her experiences about her journey on the Migration and her hopes for the next day’s rally in Victoria at the Parliament buildings. A table will be set up at the event with art supplies for people to build flags, banners, posters etc for the march into Victoria the following morning.

Date: Friday, May 7, 2010 – 19:30
Location: Mary Winspear Theatre (Bodine Hall)

Route & Checkpoints (from Alex)

We are walking from Sidney to Victoria, starting at 8:00am – our final leg of the Migration! We will walk roughly 30km to the BC Parliament buildings.

We will post our exact route as the 8th approaches, but it will be subject to change.

8:00am – 22km - The route will begin at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, 9811 Seaport Place, in Sidney. We will walk roughly 22 km along highway #17 into Victoria, and exit off Quadra St to 4085 Quadra St.

12:30pm – 7km – Lana Popham, NDP MLA for Saanich South, will be hosting a rest stop along the way at her constituency office, 4085 Quadra St (Quadra and Nicholson). From here, we will walk roughly 7km to Centennial Square.

2:00-3:00pm – 1km – Meet up at Centennial Square (Douglas and Cormorant St) to join up with the Migration. Festivities start at 2:00pm in Centennial Square, including music, speakers and a wild salmon bbq. See here for event details. We will arrive sometime between 2-2:30pm.

We will march the final km to the Legislature together at 3:30pm. It is a 1km walk for our final leg of the Migration.

4:00pm – Rally at the Legislature, including delivery of petitions and guest speakers. Bring signs! It would be great to see the names of all the towns being represented, along with animals that depend on the wild salmon.

Alexandra Morton, along with many other guests will speak at the rally. See here for a full list of speakers and rally details.

This is your chance to let Ottawa see you care about wild salmon.

Other elected officials will also be present (more information to follow). Friday March 6, 7:00pm,
Vancouver Aquarium

In the face of renewed proposals for crude oil tankers on BC’s coast, understanding the lessons of the Exxon Valdez oil spill has never been more critical to British Columbians.Join us at the Vancouver Aquarium (Aquaquest Entrance) for a public lecture by author, scientist, and story-teller Riki Ott, PhD. Her latest book, ‘Not One Drop’, chronicles the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska and its lingering effects on the environment and on coastal communities.

Dr. Ott weaves her evolution from academic to citizen-activist after the continents’ largest oil spill. She offers thought-provoking perspectives on the climate crisis, the economic crisis, and how we can nurture more participatory democracy by building sustainable communities and separating corporations and governments. Come and learn why you should care and how you can help make a difference.
The lecture will begin with an introduction by Vancouver Aquarium research scientist Dr Lance Barrett-Lennard, who will discuss recent research findings on the long-term impact of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill on killer whale populations.

To reserve and purchase tickets call 604-659-3552. Tickets: $10 ($5 for students and seniors). Reception (cash bar) and book signing to follow. For information phone 604-659-3430 ext 8 or email Meghan.McKillop@vanaqua.org or Kathy@raincoast.org

Presented by the Vancouver Aquarium, the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and the West Coast Environmental Law Association.

Leading scientists in the salmon nutrient and paleolimnology fields reviewed sediment core studies conducted in BC and Alaskan sockeye lakes. The goal of the workshop was to better understand what paleolimnological techniques can tell us about long-term changes in salmon escapements and lake ecology relative to salmon harvesting and climate change.

Workshop talks are posted under “salmon/salmon-nutrient-workshop-2008“
