Our mission:

marine field crewRaincoast is a team of conservationists and scientists empowered by our research to protect the lands, waters and wildlife of coastal British Columbia.  We use rigorous, peer-reviewed science and grassroots activism to further our conservation objectives. We call this approach ‘informed advocacy’ and it is unique amongst conservation efforts.

Our vision:

Our vision for coastal British Columbia is to protect the habitats and resources of umbrella species. We believe this approach will help ensure the survival of all species and ecological processes that exist at different scales.

Our mandate:

Investigate. Inform. Inspire.

We Investigate to understand coastal species and processes.
We Inform by bringing science to decision makers and communities.
We Inspire action to protect wildlife and their wilderness habitats.

Our history:

Raincoast is a not-for-profit research and public education organization. Since 1990, we have been making progress toward our habitat and wildlife protection goals throughout coastal British Columbia.  Our on-the-ground presence has given us a deep-rooted understanding of this vast coastline. We work in partnership with scientists, First Nations, local communities and NGOs to build support for decisions that protect marine and rainforest habitat on BC’s coast.

Our research:

Raincoast conducts applied, process-oriented, and hypothesis-driven research that has immediate utility for conservation  and the collective body of scientific knowledge. Our in-house scientists collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors to produce high-quality peer-reviewed publications.  We have a Conservation Science lab at the University of Victoria,  a research station on Denny Island, own and operate a 70’ Coastguard-certified research vessel, and maintain speed-boats suitable for research in coastal conditions.
